WHAT IS KOSMET?

The Effective Way of Keeping up with Cosmetic Science & Industry Information

KOSMET is a unique online database specialising in Cosmetic Science and Industry information. Produced by the IFSCC, KOSMET is a bibliographic database covering cosmetic and perfumery science and technology.
Content

Updated monthly, KOSMET covers articles and papers from periodicals, congresses and seminars on all matters related to cosmetics and perfumes, in particular the scientific and technical areas. We gather worldwide information on many different topics, some of which are:

  • product development
  • the trading of perfumes and cosmetics
  • the knowledge of healthy skin and its adnexa (hair, nails teeth, glands)
  • the research and development of raw materials
  • active ingredients
  • formulations
  • manufacture
  • analysis
  • safety
  • in-vitro toxicology
  • physicochemical properties
  • biological properties
  • stability
  • packaging
  • efficacy
  • clinical studies

KOSMET FORMAT

KOSMET is a bibliographic database, some 80% of references contain an abstract, which is always in English. Because KOSMET is online it enables you to carry out simple or complex searches. Added flexibility is possible, you are able to search many of the different fields within a record or limit your search by date or language of the original paper. For example you can search by subject in the whole record or by subject in the abstract only, by keyword/descriptors, or author.

The User Guide, available from the IFSCC, including a full thesaurus of the descriptors and keywords is an invaluable search tool for anyone wanting to get the most from this unique database.

AB We have investigated in vivo how various viscoelastic parameters that describe the mechanical properties of the human skin may vary with age. Accordingly, we have used a mechanical device that records the torsional extensibility of the skin. When submitted to a low torque, the time response curve of the skin affords the determination of the immediate extensibility (UE), the immediate recovery (UR), the viscoelastic part of the deformation (UV), the elastic recovery (UR/UE), and the creep relaxation time. Because the skin thickness varies with age and primarily governs the mechanical properties, it was measured through an ultrasound technique at the same sites (forearm) where the torque was applied. The results show that the skin maintains its thickness and extensibility up to the seventh decade as opposed to its elasticity or recovery capacities, which decrease from an early age. Except for skin thickness, no differences in these parameters between men and women were detected.
AB The significance of these results are discussed in terms of structure alterations. The determination of the elastic recovery (UR/UE) appears to be a parameter of choice for illustrating skin aging.
