The Cosmetic Science Course is a two year part time/correspondence course run by the Society of Cosmetic Chemists South Africa.
The course addresses the training needs of the developing cosmetologist and covers a vast scope of subjects within the Cosmetic Industry. Introductory topics include Basic Chemistry and Cell Physiology and then progress toward more specific fields such as Hair and Skin Care.
Packaging, Marketing, Production, Legislation and training in other management skills such as report writing and presentation skills will definitely benefit the student.
Assessment of progress throughout the two years is in the form of essays, practical exercises, presentations and exam sessions. During the course, assignments are given to monitor student progress and activity.
Distance Learning Option All notes for the correspondence course are posted to the students at regular intervals. Students are required to carry out Tutorial Exercises during the year, which are assessment type tasks to enable the Educational Officer to pick up learning/understanding difficulties. This is a necessity for students who do not have the privilege of attending the weekly lectures. Students would not be required to come to Johannesburg in order to do any part of this correspondence course.
JHB Option Weekly lectures are held on Tuesday evening at Symrise in Elmapark, which allows students who are not normally exposed to a laboratory environment, to work in some of industry's top laboratories where they can try their hand at formulating! We believe the lecturers to be among the best in their respective fields within the industry.
Besides the academic scenario, we find that students benefit from the contact with fellow students as well as the lecturers, where not only friendships but beneficial working relationships are established.
On completing the first year, students receive a Certificate. The Diploma is awarded upon successful completion of the second year. Every effort is made to provide a challenging, interesting and ultimately beneficial course to all the students.
Entry requirements: Maths and science at matric level Membership to the Society of Cosmetic Chemists.
